Potato Supply Issue
The sourcing of a number of fresh produce items has proved very challenging over the last few months with little light at the end of the tunnel. This is particularly serious with the supply of potatoes, and more specifically the larger kind used for jackets and the production of chips and peeled potatoes. Over the last few months, we have seen the cost of the raw material more than double, with prices increasing daily as stored stocks deplete and those left far from good quality due to the poor weather during and after planting last year.
In normal times shortfalls in stock have been supplemented by importing from the EU, but due to new laws, only washed potatoes can be imported, this, in turn, affects shelf life.
In addition, the vast increase on the price of fertilisers has meant that at least a third of previous potato growers have moved to other crops.
Short term, until the new season starts, which is currently running around three weeks behind, there continues to be an escalating shortage of quality large potatoes, this, unfortunately, means we have again to increase the price of all prepared and whole potatoes.
Regrettably, we do not see this issue improving for several weeks, and cannot rule out prices increasing even more.
We are sorry to be the bearer of this bad news, but please do not hesitate to contact any of the Tomson team should you require any further information or wish to discuss further.
